Where are the surf lessons and surf camp?

All of our surf instruction courses are conducted at Sachuest Town Beach (Second Beach) in Middletown, Rhode Island.  Our meeting point for surf lessons and camp is in the main parking lot, west corner.  Look for the Rhody Surf truck with a BIG breaking wave - it's hard to miss!

Where are the SUP lessons?

All of our SUP instruction courses are conducted in the beautiful Newport Harbor.

Do I need to 'check-in' any where prior to beach?

You can show up right at the beach for your lesson. Our instructors will be waiting in our Rhody Surf truck at your scheduled time.  You may always visit our surf shop prior to pick up any beach supplies or information during normal business operations.  Prior to your lesson, you must complete a waiver form here: Rhody Surf Lesson Waiver - which can be completed on any computer or mobile device.

Should I arrive early?

Students should arrive 15 minutes prior to start of lesson to get checked in and geared up.

Are you open year round?

Our surf shop on 8 Fair Street, adjacent to the Red Parrot on the Memorial Blvd & Thames St intersection, is open from May-September.  Our hours of operation are Monday-Saturday 10 AM - 6 PM and Sundays 11 AM - 5 PM.  Our lessons and camp programs run from 9-5 everyday during the summer season.

Should I reserve a lesson in advance?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome but we book up quickly and encourage call ahead appointments for surf lessons, surf camp and large group rentals.  With that said, you can always try your luck if you're down at the beach looking for something new to try!

Do I sign a waiver?

Every student/guardian must abide by & sign our waiver form available on the bottom right of our website or via this link: Rhody Surf Lesson Waiver. Please note, if the student is under 18 years old and unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian, the waiver must be submitted and signed in advance through the link provided below. You only need to fill it out once even if you have multiple lessons or rentals.

Do you offer a Military Discount?

Rhody Surf offers a discount to our brave men and women in the U.S. military.  Show your military ID card and receive 10% off all services and purchases at time of sale.

Are there any age or physical requirements?

From young children to older adults, we have worked with students of all ages and athletic abilities.  Our most common concern is water safety and confidence.  All students must know how to swim prior to their surf lesson.

Are there any health requirements?

All medical conditions must be disclosed to Rhody Surf before lessons begin. If you wear contacts, wear them! No goggles required - just keep eyes shut when you wipe out.

What if it is raining?

Surf Lessons are held rain or shine...you're already wet!  Rain storms typically are accompanied by surf, and passing rain storms often provide cleaner wave conditions and better surf.

How late in the season does surf camp run?

Surf Camp runs weekdays throughout the summer until Labor Day; Monday-Friday, rain or shine and never on weekends.

How long is my lesson?

All SUP and surf lessons are standard 1 hour from scheduled time.  Surf camp is 2 hours, 9 - 11 AM.

What is your cancellation policy?

Once a lesson is scheduled, it is deemed as ‘on’.  If for any reason you cannot make the surf lesson, Rhody Surf, Inc. requires a 48-hour cancellation notification to avoid the lost of deposit. If a Gift Certificate or coupon is used to make the reservation, you must provide at least 48-hours notice of cancellation as well or the credit will be voided.

Are there refunds if I am running late?

There is no refund for arriving late or leaving early for a scheduled lesson. We provide no partial refunds for any of our offerings.  It is your responsibility to show up on time.  However, we understand busy schedules so if it is within 48-hours, please notify Rhody Surf, Inc. you will not be attending the pre-scheduled lesson.

What if the weather and wave conditions are not suitable?

Poor wave and weather (thunder & lightning) conditions may arise where a lesson cannot be adequately given.  In this event, rescheduling the lesson is our first option for a time convenient to both parties.

Do I need to bring anything?

Rhody Surf, Inc. will supply all necessary equipment for the lessons and nature’s conditions.  We recommend to pack sunscreen, a towel and water for your lesson - all of which can be purchased in advanced at Rhody Surf's surf shop!

Is there easy access parking near Rhody Surf?

At Second Beach, the best location to park and provide you direct access to our surf truck is in the main parking lot, near the beach pavilion.  The beach and parking is run by the Town of Middletown. Details on daily or seasonal parking rates can be viewed here - Middletown, RI - Park and Recreation. For SUP Harbor Lessons at Kings Beach, there is public parking. Kings Beach is also a short walk from downtown Newport.
